INSIST ON A CODE OF PROFESSIONAL CONDUCT
You have a lot of power to make your privates worth so much more. Early on I chose to take responsibility for making my privates worth my time and money. I would tell my instructors how I best learned and frequently let them know on how I was doing, so they could teach me the best of what they knew. You can learn to teach your instructors how you best learn. Below are some guidelines to get the most out of your privates.

GUIDELINES TO GET THE MOST OUT OF YOUR PRIVATES
CRITICAL SKILL ASSESSMENT TO ADVANCE TO YOUR NEXT LEVEL: One of the most effective ways to use an instructor is to have them identify and help you understand what your next steps are to advance your level of dancing. A competent instructor will be able to quickly evaluate, assess and articulate what you need to change to go to your next level of dance. Now and then it works to focus on tango vocabulary. However, understanding the foundational skills needed to do the new vocabulary is way more important to rapidly advance your dancing - no more guessing.
BREAKTHROUGH HABITS & PATTERNS: EVERYTHING that you shift in your dancing deals with changing a habit and patterned way of moving your body. Therefore, my suggestion is to have your teacher teach you how to breakthrough your bad habits in your foundational skills - patterns of movement that challenge you and stop you from going to your next level of dancing. Learning more vocabulary achieves far less than going for a breakthrough in a single bad habit and pattern of moving!
UNDERSTAND YOUR BODY’S WAY OF LEARNING AND MOVING: Through breaking habits and patterns of movement, you understand many ways your body moves and learns. This understanding allows you to easily and quickly break future found habits and patterns of movement. Make sure your teacher assists you in understanding how your body learns and moves!
LEARN BIO-MECHANICS OF WHAT YOU ARE CHANGING: Ask your teacher what you do with your body to achieve a new movement. For example, if you are supposed to be more grounded, ask what you do bio-mechanically to achieve this - such as bending your knees more, articulating your ankles while keeping your entire foot on the ground, and not lifting your legs, but rolling through the foot from heel to the three points of the front of the foot as you move forward. Do not accept general words, but get bio-mechanical specifics. If a teacher does not know right away, ask them to do what they are asking you to do, and tell you what they are doing with their body.
UNDERSTAND YOUR LEARNING CHALLENGES: As a teacher facilitates your understanding of how you learn, you discover your learning challenges. Ask your teacher to point out your learning challenges and how to work with them and to eventually overcome them. Once you know how to work with your learning challenges, all Tango learning is easier, quicker and less frustrating.
GO FOR ACCELERATED LEARNING- 50-500% FASTER: Do not settle for a teacher that does not employ at least a few rapid learning methodologies, and teaches you these methodologies. Ask your teacher what learning methodologies they use. If they can’t answer, you might be in for some slow learning. It really does not take that long to make a shift in your dancing, but it takes you so much longer to change when you do not have concrete methods of learning.
ASK FOR ORGANIZED TAKE-HOME NOTES: Notes help you to easily remember and work on your own with your session’s material resulting in rapid learning. Ask your teacher to provide written notes that you understand, or have them help you record what you worked on, and need to work on. Sometimes an e-mail works where the teacher types a few notes during the lesson and simply e-mails you after you leave.
