How do you determine what teacher can give you a great return of investment in a private, saving you the money you could invest in workshops? First, attend the teacher’s workshops to check them out. Second, research the factors below that contribute to a great return of investment in individual training. FACTORS THAT CONTRIBUTE TO A GREAT RETURN OF INVESTMENT FROM PRIVATES RAPPORT: It is important to have a good connection with your teacher, and feel safe to explore moving your body in new ways during Tango training. Before committing to many privates, I suggest making sure you do feel safe and connected with your Tango teacher. EXPERTISE NEEDED NOW: Your investment will be heavily conditional upon the expertise of your teacher. The expertise of one teacher may not work for you now or ever, or may be the best expertise for you right now. What do you need now, in your dancing? I once took privates for $110/ hour and only worked on pressure within the embrace. I could have easily have learned that from a local teacher at 1/3 the price. However, that same teacher could have helped me years later with several learning challenges I had. TEACHING EXPERIENCE OUTSIDE OF TANGO: Some teachers are good or great dancers, but not good teachers and vice versa. I believe some of the best teachers are individuals that learned other movement-based arts, including other dances, sports, training modalities, Yoga and martial arts. Just learning to dance good Tango does not ensure good teaching ability! Also, being able to draw upon other teaching experiences makes a better teacher. STYLE:  For beginning and intermediate dancers the dance style of the teacher is not as critical. However, as you move into advanced territory, you may want to start picking teachers that dance in a way that you would like to learn. CONSEQUENCES VERSUS ‘ONE WAY’: I have come across teachers that say, “this way of moving is THE way,” or “this is the proper way.” I cringe. There are so many ways to move in Tango. I think one of the most effective teaching methods is to help students understand the consequences of their movement choices. If you dance in close embrace versus open embrace, what are the consequences? I believe when students understand the consequences of their movement choices, their dancing style and brilliance emerges, and the student is more excited about learning and dancing. BIO-MECHANICS: If you can find a teacher that understands the bio-mechanics of Tango, you benefit from getting answers of what you actually do with your body to achieve a new movement. This understanding is uncommon in Tango, but amazing when you find it. LOOK for it.
