Hundreds of methods exist to accelerate learning. Below I outline some methodologies I use to achieve a 50-500% acceleration in learning Tango:

CODIFICATION
Codification is about developing a systematic building approach to teaching skill sets needed. For example, when I was a professional ski instructor at Keystone Resort, CO the resort’s ski instructor program taught the 4 foundational skills of downhill skiing. These 4 skill sets (balance, rotary control, pressure and edge control, and rhythm and flow) were further broken down into 9 levels of skiing ability 1-9. Through this codification, ski instructors we were able to quickly assess where each skier was at and knew exactly what the next steps were to propel them to their next level of skiing. Furthermore, we acquired exercises to assist our students in learning these body-based skills.

In Tango, a few people here and there work at codifying tango skills. Two good examples are Luciana Valle and Gustavo Naviera. I have been fortunate to have experienced dozens of classes with each of them. It is clear to me they have their own codification system.

However, this info is not being shared worldwide in a collaborative effort. In skiing, the organization PSIA (Professional Ski Instructors Association) shared their codification, and the best instructors consistently evolved the codification every year to take into account the vast experience of ski instructors worldwide and the evolvement of ski equipment technology.

Instead of re-inventing the wheel, new ski instructors quickly learned cutting-edge methods to teach, and thereby all ski instructors continually evolved. The acceleration of learning skiing has been increased considerably - way more than 100% since I was an instructor over 15 years ago - I know this by hearing ski instructors 5 years after I instructed tell me about this acceleration in learning itself.

My vision for Tango is someday instructors will share their codifications worldwide and evolve it. I believe Tango is just entering the adolescent stage of growth (4 stages of growth - infancy, adolescence, maturity, wisdom.) I continually work on my own codification so I can more effectively and efficiently teach the appropriate skills.

Another teacher who codifies Tango is Daniel Trenner - one of his students related to me that Daniel can take most people off the street and teach within 20 minutes how to follow a walk to the cross. He clearly has a a codification. Also Pulpo has codified Tango, and seems to be able to quickly teach the fundamental skills required to make a big shift in dancing Tango.

Unfortunately I believe many instructors are still stuck within a paradigm/ world view of scarcity where they do not want to share with other instructors their info for fear of the competition beating them. When instructors shift into a paradigm of abundance, I believe they will attract many more students and make Tango better for all of us.

SERIES OF SKILL BUILDING CLASSES
Another element that contributes to accelerated learning is offering classes that work in a series, building upon skill sets from one class to the next.

The intensivos that Luciana Valle offers in Buenos Aires through Deb Sclar and Brian Dunn’s marketing and organization efforts are brilliant, as well as Gustavo & Giselle’s intensivos in Boulder! These 20-25 hour workshops build skills in a series. I can easily say that 25 hours with Luciana Valle or Gustavo & Giselle is worth 75-100+ hours of random classes that do not work in a series. So here is one example of a 400% acceleration of learning Tango. I highly recommend these intensivos. through Deb & Brian’s website: www.Dance of the Heart.com.

SEQUENCING
This element in teaching / learning is hard to learn and actually get good at. This aspect is the ability to break down movement into its constituent parts. Many times a teacher will teach a step or move, but does not go into its constituent parts. It takes SO MUCH longer to learn. For example, one man in my community was struggling for over a year in leading back ochos. I had the opportunity to work with him individually for just 5 minutes and was able to quickly identify which skill sets he was lacking that contributed to his inability to properly lead back ochos. After explaining that he was missing the ability to rotate the follow on her axis before leading a back step, as well as the ability to move around her axis to lead her rotation on her axis he was able to dramatically shift his ability to lead back ochos.

Another example is how many dancers who are follows over-engage certain muscles in their pelvic/ hip region which keeps them from truly shifting weight. I have assisted a few dancers now that have danced over 3-7 years in Tango but never really got the foundational skill of weight changes.

Bottom line here is that with the ability to break down movement to its true constituent parts, combined with the ability I describe below - Pattern Formation/ Shifting, learning Tango can easily be accelerated, resulting in DRAMATIC foundational shifts in your dancing.

PATTERN FORMATION/ SHIFTING
This element requires a teacher to have an ability to understand how patterns of movement are learned, held and shifted within the human body. Many Tango teachers only have experience within Tango, but do not have the additional powerful training offered to students in Yoga, Pilates, Feldenkrais, Hellerwork, Rolfing, Martial Arts, the field of body-centered psychotherapy or many other movement oriented modalities.

Darrell Sanchez in Boulder holds a lot of experience and wisdom as a professional rolfer and avid learner of many movement oriented modalities. I personally have benefited immensely from his and Sue’s workshops and classes. See Tango Colorado teacher’s page for their contact info.

Through my own training in movement and experience as a body-centered psychotherapist, I have been amazed at the power of knowing how patterns are learned, held and shifted. When an instructor understands that all patterns held have an emotional component, understands the constituent parts of the movement, and understands how to facilitate the pattern shifting taking into account all components of the student (emotional/ physical/ mental), patterns can be shifted in a matter of minutes versus years or never shifting the patterns.

I could point to many examples of individuals in my community that have shifted holding patterns quickly or stayed stuck for over 2 years. Individual competent attention to shifting the holding pattern would dramatically shift the dancing of those individuals.

Need I write the obvious here? With the right pattern shifting skills, learning Tango can be accelerated DRAMATICALLY. You can learn these skills as a student independent of a teacher or work with an appropriate teacher in a private training to get the benefit of dramatic pattern shifting.

MOTIVATION/ FOCUS
We all know how much more we achieve with focus and motivation. Before a vacation, we seem to get 2-3X more done in the same amount of time as when we do not have a looming vacation. This element of Tango is obvious but not often dealt with.

But even if Tango instructors take the time to assist their students to understand their motivations, there is still an art and science to facilitating an increase in motivation and focus in individuals.

As a professional life-coach, life-skills seminar leader and psychotherapist, I have had countless opportunities to work with individuals’ motivation and focus. I find that facilitating a person to address and CHANGE their motivation and focus is the hardest element of all of the work I have done in the fields of psychotherapy and human potential development.

However, bottom line is that with only an increase in motivation and focus, a 50-500%+ acceleration of learning is achievable. Addressing motivation and focus is outside the scope of this already long article, so I will address motivation and focus in all of my group trainings and of course in-depth in my individual trainings. In addition, I will offer a seminar on accelerated learning for dance and skill based movement.

TOOLS
So many tools exist to train movement from many industries. Every sport addresses skill sets, and evolves within their sport the tools best suited to train critical skill sets. I have liberally taken tools from the fields of psychology and human potential development and applied them to Tango -- I have identified and used over 26 tools. Some of these you may already be familiar with: Overtraining, Consistent Feedback, Drilling, Exploring the extremes, Sequencing, Mindsets, Beginner’s Mind and others.

Some tools you may not be as familiar with:

NLP Filters
Over 17 exist that underlie the nature of how we experience the world. When these are identified and worked with, dramatic shifts occur. Think Tony Robbins as the leader of NLP work.

Learning Styles
Many exist such as Visual, Audio, Kinesthetic, Olfactory, Modeling, Trial and Error, Mirroring.

Multiple Learning Intelligences
LINGUISTIC, MUSICAL, LOGICAL & MATHEMATICAL, BODILY & KINESTHETIC, SPATIAL, INTERPERSONAL, INTRA-PERSONAL, NATURALIST, EXISTENTIAL

Measures
We are teleological beings, which means we learn according to the programs we give our brains. The brain research in the 1960’s explored and discovered that we need to know what we are going after to truly engage the potential we have as human beings to learn, grow and change. Many years ago I shifted to helping people create the internal subjective measures they needed to learn and achieve what they wanted. My clients immediately experienced a 200-500% increase in the speed of achieving that which they measured.

I did not pick these numbers out of a hat. I scientifically measured the rate of change with 100’s of clients and discovered the 200-500% rate increase of their achievement.

Beliefs
The beliefs we hold determine our rate of learning well beyond what I can explain here briefly. However, you can relate to how beliefs and expectations influence your learning and dancing by recalling Milongas that you did not feel good about yourself and thereby had a bad time.

Bottom Line: a 50-500% increase in your rate of learning is possible, probable and easily achieved when sometimes even 1 of these elements is worked with. What is possible when several of these elements are worked with?http://danceoftheheart.com/http://tangocolorado.org/teachersDjs.aspxshapeimage_1_link_0shapeimage_1_link_1
